Miriam Goldberg

September 22, 1920May 2, 2020

Miriam Goldberg passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2020 at the age of 99.

She is survived by her son Marc and his wife Marilyn, her daughter-in-law Lorri, grandchildren Sarah (Adam Chodos), Lisa (Adam Haller) and Ben (Sheila) Goldberg, Marisa (Brandon Wiggins), Devon Goldberg, Dylan Goldberg and great grandchildren Eli and Henry Chodos, William and Owen Haller, Brody and Ryland Wiggins, as well as over thirty nephews and nieces. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she was the youngest child of Sarah Ein Gold and Morris Gold. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Leonard Goldberg, and their son Paul; sisters Ida, Rose, Jennie, Fannie, Celia, Gertrude, Sophie, Lillian, Connie and brother Dr. I. Roy Gold.

After completing High School in Glace Bay, Miriam attended Maritime Business College in Halifax. While there, she stayed at Shirreff Hall at Dalhousie University, joined a sorority, and made many lifetime friends. Miriam and Leonard were married in 1943 and celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary in 2018 at the Hotel Nova Scotian, the same venue where their wedding took place.

A devoted wife, her married life was spent in Halifax where they raised their children Marc and Paul and enjoyed events centered around their large extended family and circle of friends. She and her husband were founding members of Shaar Shalom Synagogue. Miriam was active in charitable causes. She was an avid shopper. A great communicator with excellent writing skills, Miriam enjoyed writing letters and staying in touch with her family and friends.

In addition to her extraordinary caregivers and friends, her family wishes to thank Dr. Morris Trager, her physician for many decades, for his exemplary care. Also, special thanks to Judy McLeod, who was a wonderful support system for Miriam over the years, and Stephen Penny, a constant visitor who delighted Miriam by playing his ukelele and singing Cape Breton melodies with Miriam, who never forgot her Gold family Glace Bay roots.

A private graveside service will be held at the Shaar Shalom Cemetery on May 4 at 11 a.m with Rabbi Karlin officiating. Donations in her memory can be made to Shaar Shalom Synagogue or a charity of your choice.

Our sincere condolences to Marc and the entire Goldberg family on the passing of Miriam. She was a wonderful warm classy lady who was so friendly to us and to our family. She was one of Mom's best friends and in later years was a very steady support for both Mom and Dad in their final years in Halifax. No matter what difficulty she faced she always had a positive comment, a happy comment when we greeted her on our visits home to Halifax.May she rest in peace .We are better for having known her throughout our years.

Marc and the Goldberg Family

So saddened to hear of Miriam's passing. I'll remember her as a most gracious lady and proud matriarch of her family. She had a wonderful life with Leonard and watched many great achievements and owned them all.

My condolences to you all. I didn't realise that Leonard had passed away last year. I have many fond memories of the Goldberg home from my days in college as I was a good friend of Paul's.
That was 50 years ago but I can still remember Miriam's happy nature, her great chocolate chip cookies and Lenard whistling a happy tune. Peace to them both now that they are together. Chris

Miriam was a grand lady in the finest sense. She had a grace and elegance in everything she did, always speaking to you rather than at you, brightening your day with her lovely smile and making you feel important at whatever you were doing. She made an important contribution too everyone whose life she touched, without even seeming to try. Condolences to the family in their loss.

Mark and Ben
Thinking of you and your families at this sad time . I have had the privilege of getting to know Miriam over the past several years at the Squadron. She was always so kind and thoughtful, with a beautiful smile and giving the impression that I was the most important person in the room. Kate joins me in offering our condolences .

I want to extend my deep sympathy to you and your family at the loss of your mother. I have many great memories of her ( and you, your father and Paul) from holiday seasons many years ago when I was a student and working part-time at some of the stores.
Your mother always showed so much interest in all of us and what our plans for the future might be.
Warm regards,
