Nicholas Robin (Bob) Maywood Lee. Our dearest Bob slept gently away at the QEII Infirmary, Halifax, on March 11, 2015, watched over tenderly by his loving family. Born in London, England, 1934, the only child of Dorothy Tulett and Robert Lee, Bob had recently celebrated his 80th birthday in the company of family members and many dear friends. Following graduation from Pangbourne Nautical College, England, he sailed the seven seas in the course of his early 14-year career with both international and Great Lakes shipping companies. He then joined the Canadian Coastguard in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and was promoted to District Surveyor Maritimes Region and progressively senior posts with the Canadian Coastguard and Transport Canada before taking early retirement and moving to Kingston, Jamaica, becoming Director, Marine Affairs and Surveyor General for the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, and helping to establish the Jamaican International Registry of Shipping. His next venture, upon return to Canada, was as Consultant to the Department of Environment, promoting the DOE Clean Feather Program to encourage wider awareness among shipping of marine environmental issues affecting marine life. In addition to holding both British and Canadian unlimited certification as a Master Mariner, he obtained an Economics degree from Saint Mary’s University followed by a year of postgraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Marine Transportation and Admiralty Law. He was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; the International Association of Marine Economists, the Marine Accident Investigators International Forum and the Honourable Company of Master Mariners. He was proud of being named a Freeman of the City of London and he enjoyed the meeting of like minds in the Sackville Trust and the Fleming Investment Club as well as through his weekly French Club (he had Huguenot blood on the maternal side); and as a longtime Board Member of the Scotia Festival of Music. Bob had a green thumb and enjoyed working in his large gardens in Halifax and at ‘the cottage’ on Mason’s Point. At auction, he could not resist a ship portrait or ship model or any marine artifact from a sliver of scrimshaw to a brass binnacle. Bob and his wife, Fay, marked their 46th wedding anniversary on March 5 & he is also survived by his daughter Christina Dorothy Lee (John Delos Reyes); grand-children Chelsea Euphemia and Miles Nicholas Delos Reyes, all of Toronto; Tulett family members Hazel, Howard, Andre and Lara of West Sussex and Cynthia (William) Jewell of Hove, England; brother-in-law John (Susan) McGonigal, Camberley, England, and sister-in-law Margaret (David) Holland, Wellington, New Zealand and their families. The funeral service and committal to the Columbarium will take place at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1340 Martello Street, Halifax, on Tuesday March 24 at 11 AM, the Very Rev. Paul W. Smith officiating. A Reception follows in The Great Hall. Visitation will take place Monday March 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Cruikshank’s Funeral Home. In recent years, Bob and Fay liked to enjoy the early spring in England & Scotland & some ashes will be committed to the family plot in Durrington Cemetery West, Sussex, England, in accordance with Robin’s wishes, in 2015, so that Robin (as he is known in England) may soon again find himself with the cherry blossom in the church-yard, surrounded by the yellow daffodils that he loved. Donations may be made to the Sackville Memorial Trust or Missions to Seafarers or to the Scotia Festival of Music.
