Peter Asher Selig Herschorn

March 17, 1921January 14, 2014

A lifelong resident of Halifax, Peter Asher Selig Herschorn has died at the age of 92. Peter was born on March 17,1921, the son of Myer Herschorn and Seema (Podvoll) Herschorn. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Sylvia (Lipton) who passed away in 1997, and by his beloved granddaughter Laura Herschorn in 1994. Peter is survived by his two children, Nancy Cieplinski (Menashe) and Martin (Victoria Rees), his grandchildren, Adina, David and Avi Cieplinski (Jenny Yelin), Joseph Herschorn (Catherine Turcotte Roy) and great grandsons Aidan, Ethan, Izzak, and Max Gabriel. Peter loved jazz and played trumpet with Don Warner's Band in the 1930's. After attending Dalhousie University, he entered the family business, Franklin Herschorn Limited founded by his uncle, Joseph M. Franklin and his father, Myer. For the next 4 decades, Peter worked alongside his cousin and long time business partner, Mitchell Franklin. In the 1950's, Franklin Herschorn Theatres grew to operate one of the largest chains of independent theaters in the Maritime Provinces, including 4 drive-in theaters. In the early 1960's, Mitchell and Peter bought the Lord Nelson Hotel and developed the adjacent office and retail tower. Peter loved the hospitality industry and took great pride in operating the Lord Nelson, earning the respect of the hotel's many employees and guests until his retirement from business. Peter was a member of the Halifax Rotary Club and received the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow recognition. Peter contributed to the business, cultural and broader community of Halifax and Nova Scotia. He served on many boards, including the Board of the Halifax Infirmary, the Nova Scotia College of Art And Design, and the Point Pleasant Park Commission. He served as President of the Innkeepers Guild of Nova Scotia. He was also active in the Halifax Board of Trade, the Boy Scout Association, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. Peter's favourite hobby was photography. He passionately sought out the habitat of the coastal heron and bald eagles and photographed them beautifully. He was a proud and active member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. Peter and Sylvia were founding members of the Shaar Shalom Synagogue where Peter served as President. He was a strong supporter of the State of Israel. He was instrumental in inaugurating the sale of State of Israel Bonds in Halifax. Peter will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He spent his later years at Parkland Estates Clayton Park, before moving to Parkstone Enhanced Care. We are very grateful for the wonderful care which he received at both facilities. Funeral services will be held at the Shaar Shalom Synagogue, 1981 Oxford Street in Halifax at 11:00 am on Friday, January 17th. Interment will follow at the Shaar Shalom Cemetery. In accordance with Jewish custom, the funeral service does not include flowers. I have just discovered these entries on the passing of my respected and loved cousin Peter. I was fortunate enough to reconnect with Peter several years ago at the Bar Mitzvah of his great grandson Aidan. Peter and I had not seen each other since we were teenagers when Aunt Seema (Podvoll Herschorn) brought him to New York where I grew up. What a lovely man. I am happy I had the opportunity to spend a little bit of time with him. And I so regret his passing.

We offer our condolences and sincere sympathy on the loss of your loved one, Peter. Please be assured of our thoughts and prayers at this time.

I enjoyed many many conversations with Peter from my days at Atlantic Photo Supply. When I turned to studies at Atlantic School of Theology, Peter was very supportive and our conversations changed in focus, although still much appreciated. Peter attended my ordination as a cleric with the Anglican Church and we kept in touch over the past number of years.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
