

PARKASH, Dr. Rajender - Halifax
Age 87, Halifax, passed away at home on Aug 21, 2023. Born on May 20, 1936 in Bhiwani, India to Balmukand and Jamuna Sharma, he was the seventh of 8 siblings. After completing his medical degree in Patiala, Punjab he worked for 2 years in Delhi then moved to the UK in 1961. He enjoyed his time in both England and Ireland, where he worked for 10 years.
He moved to Halifax in 1971 and eventually settled in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia where he practiced medicine for 36 years. A passionate and dedicated physician, he was the Chief of Internal Medicine at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for 20 years and Chief of Staff for 3 years. During his time in Yarmouth, he served on numerous committees for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, including as a member of the Council, as well as being a member of the Executive, Investigation, and Registration committees. He worked tirelessly and was dedicated to both the Yarmouth community and his family. Furthering his commitment to community, Dr. Parkash and his wife established an endowment fund to help support nursing students at the Yarmouth site of the Dalhousie University School of Nursing. In recognition of his many years of service at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, the renal dialysis unit was named in his honour.
His dedication to his patients, the medical community, and the Yarmouth Regional Hospital resulted in him being the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Doctors Nova Scotia Senior Membership Award (2006), Honorary Membership Award by The Canadian Medical Association (2006), Outstanding Service Award from the Diabetes Care Program (2011), and the Gold-headed Cane Award by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (2012).
After moving to Halifax in 2008, he continued to work as a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax for an additional 10 years.
Reluctantly retiring in 2018, after over 55 years of medical practice, he enjoyed his final years travelling with his wife and spending time with his grandchildren, all of whom made him very proud. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Asha Parkash, his sons Ravi (Ratika) Parkash, Raman (Sandhya) Parkash and 4 grandchildren Keshav, Annika, Arjun and Diya.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 PM Sunday Aug 27, 2023 at the Westin Hotel, 1181 Hollis St., in Halifax. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
