It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Wells Merriam Boyd (1936-2025) following complications from a recent fall and a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Bob passed peacefully in Halifax surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Roseline (née Guimond); his three sons, Stephen (Sheila Dernier), Andrew and Peter; his three cherished grandchildren, Ainsley, Lauren and Elliott; his sister, Meredith Layton; and several nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Percy and Christina (née Merriam) Boyd and his sister, Grace Pellerin.
Born in Five Islands, Nova Scotia, Bob had many fond memories of growing up in Great Village and spending time in Port Greville, enthralled by the ships of the Bay of Fundy. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mount Allison University (class of ‘60) leading to a career initially in banking and then as an auditor with the federal government.
In addition to his family, his biggest joy was the cottage he built on Spondo Lake, which provided much comfort to him in later years as his Alzheimer’s progressed. He could often be seen walking the familiar terrain picking flowers to give his beloved wife. Ever supportive of his three sons, Bob volunteered for many years with the local Boy Scouts troop.
A visitation will be held at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home at 2666 Windsor Street on February 1, 2025 starting at 10:00am. There will be a short service at 11:00am, followed by a reception from 11:30am to 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
