Robert Michael Ross, 58, died suddenly and with little pain of a heart attack, February 23, 2021, at home in Halifax, NS. Robert was born in Halifax, NS to Anthony Ross and Elizabeth (Monies) Ross on July 31, 1962. During Rob's early childhood he lived in Dublin, Ireland, and several provinces in Canada, settling to live most of his life in the West End of Halifax. For several years throughout his life, Robert lived with his aunt and uncle, Sylvia and Mark Yeoman, and his cousins in Dorchester, New Brunswick. Robert's surviving family are grateful for the Yeoman family's essential care and friendship while with them.
Robert graduated from JL Isley High School, Halifax, NS and graduated with distinction from NSCC's Radio Television Journalism program, Kingstec Campus, Kentville, NS. Rob was gifted with a beautiful speaking voice like his father's and was able to be on national radio several times and record many books for the blind.
Despite fighting a lifelong battle with bipolar disorder, Rob was a friendly, warm, and charismatic person of great insight and intellect. He was often happy despite his difficult circumstances. Rob was a discriminating lover of food, music, television drama, and all things radio. He listened to CBC radio avidly and actively formed strong opinions about all that he heard. He was a wealth of musical and cultural knowledge. Rob was especially fond of Blues music. His favourite band was the Canadian rock band Rush whose optimism, imagination, and energy often helped him face the difficulties of his illness.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved uncle Robin Monies. Robert is survived by his brother Nicholas Ross, of Halifax, NS. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Cruickshank's Funeral Home, Halifax. Due to covid-19 restrictions, there will be no public service or reception at this time. As Rob was Irish Canadian and loved St Patrick's Day, we ask that you might celebrate his spirit then. Pastor Michael Vlahos, a lifelong friend of the family and of Robert's, will provide a service for family at Robert's internment. Donations can be made to a mental health support service of your choice or to promote affordable housing.
