Rose Dorothy McGinn

August 17, 1923December 31, 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Rose Dorothy McGinn of Halifax, on December 31, 2020 at 97 years of age. Born in Halifax on August 17, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Jessie (Stokes) McGinn.

Rose was a proud graduate of Mount Saint Vincent Academy and of Mount Saint Vincent University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After a full career with the Public Service Commission of Halifax (HRM Water), she retired from her role as Personnel Officer in 1985.

Besides her business interests, Rose studied music with the Maritime Academy of Music and with the late Mary Dee Girroir. She sang in the Nova Scotia Opera productions of the 1950’s; later with the Armdale Chorus; and for many years with the senior choir of St. Theresa Catholic church. For several years after her retirement, Rose assisted with the entertainment at St. Vincent’s Guest House. Her interest in music continued all her life, and she shared this passion with family and friends as she would sit at the piano with loved ones and her beautiful voice distinguished any family ceremony or event.

Rose was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, Mount Saint Vincent University Alumnae Association, the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

She is survived by her sister Helen Harvey, Halifax; and sister-in-law Fay McGinn, Hantsport. “Aunt Rose” will be fondly remembered by her 10 beloved nieces and nephews; 23 grand nieces and nephews; 7 great grand nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins and close friends. Besides her parents, Rose was predeceased by her brothers Charles (Madeline), Eugene and Joseph; and nephews Peter, John and Paul.

The family would like to thank the Parkland at the Gardens staff who have provided loving and professional care over the past four years. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Cruikshanks. A private family funeral mass is being planned that will be streamed; link will be provided once available.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Chalice for continued sponsorship of two children in India and Haiti as Rose did for many years. Please indicate code #1203511 when doing this online at (select Donate in Memory) or send to Chalice, 101-26 Union Street, Bedford B4A 2B5.

have a memory or condolence to add?

Rose's warmth and lively mind were like sunshine whenever I encountered her and Helen at Glenister family get-togethers. When I was a child she overcame my shyness and in later meetings she cultivated my interest in family history and our Stokes connection. I particularly remember her kindness to my parents, Joe & Mae Glenister. When I think of Rose I will always smile.

I was saddened by the news of Rose’s passing. I was recalling our close friendship that began when she reminded my wife of an available condo across the hall at Oxford Court. For the next 29 years she and her sister Helen were excellent neighbors and contributed significantly to the enjoyment of our life at Oxford Court. I extend to her sister Helen, her nieces, and other family members my sympathy. A donation in her memory will be going to Chalice. Kind regards Brian Maloney

My deepest condolence yo the family of Rose McGinn. Her and her sister Helen belonged to St Theresa’s CWL. That’s how I knew them both well. Some members of our CWL went to their condo on Oxford Street to pray the rosary with Rose and Helen. They were always so happy to see us. May Rose forever Rest In Peace. Joanne Duffett
