Ruth Margaret Kathleen Lewis (McKay) passed away at Halifax VG Hospital on September 29 at the age of 98. She was predeceased by her husband Aubrey, her son Wayne, her daughter Patricia, and her siblings. She will be remembered by her son Allan Roy (Lynn). Her sister-in-law Christine, her nieces Mary Lee, Barbara Anne, Caroline, and her nephew Phillip.

Ruth was born and raised in Cape Breton. She married Aubrey and managed the family moves of an Army life, the highlight of which was their move to the Yukon in late 1950’s. Retirement brought Ruth and Aubrey back to Nova Scotia where Ruth worked on the switchboard at the Children’s Hospital in Halifax and Aubrey worked with the Red Cross. Ruth’s many interests included crochet, quilting, knitting, word puzzles, bingo and genealogy. She made the best apple pies and cookies and the lightest tea biscuits.

When Ruth’s son, Wayne, suddenly passed away, Ruth’s neighbor Elvira comforted Ruth until family members could arrive. Elvira’s friendship was greatly appreciated as she continued to visit Ruth and assist her to get to appointments, thus allowing Ruth to remain in her own apartment and maintain her independence until this Spring. Natalie always brought muffins, chips or grapes to encourage Ruth to eat. Wayne’s good friends, Liz, Elaine and Nancy, honoured Wayne’s memory when they visited Ruth, bringing gifts and treats while regaling her with stories about Wayne. Mary Lee’s many visits and phone calls kept Ruth informed about family news. We wish to thank you and others for your kindness.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to the staff of the VG Hospital for the kindness and support they provided Ruth.

In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Fairview Cemetery where her husband is buried. In lieu of flowers, any donation made in Ruth’s memory to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
