As a young apprentice with Canadian Westinghouse in Hamilton, ON, Tom moved his family to Moncton, NB, Sept Iles, QC, back to Moncton, when, after a 33 year career, he then partnered with John W. Lindsay and Carlise Norwood in Halifax, NS, owning and managing Nova Scotia Armature Works, Purdy Brothers Shipbuilding and many other ventures.
He enjoyed boating and the sea, owning The Amanda, The Lady Janet and Hydra Mariner. His connection with the water earned him a place in the heart of Captain Danny MacNeil, his long time friend. Together they enjoyed reminiscing about the many ventures the two had enjoyed over the years. A very special thank you to Danny for his constant companionship over the years and his vigil nightly during Tom’s hospital stay, being by his side to the end.
Tom is survived by his long time life partner and best friend, Bessie (Doucette) who provided the joy in Tom’s life; his daughter Mary Dempster, son Thomas William Caldwell and only grandson, Thomas John “TJ” Dempster (Kylee) and great granddaughter Peyton, all of Peterborough, ON.
He was predeceased by his parents and only brother, John Caldwell (Marg), his wife Maude Caldwell and his son-in-law, Donald Robert Annand (Mary).
Heartfelt appreciation to all the staff at QEII who were compassionate and exceptional with his care and to his great friends Danny and Robie Bruce, who visited daily.
A memorial service will be held on Friday April 21 at 11:00 AM from Cruikshank's Funeral Home, on 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missions to Seafarers, 844 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS, B3H 4M8.
