It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of an era in Kjipuktuk North End Halifax Mi’kmaw community. After a brave battle with cancer, “Our Willie” entered the spirit world, peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the Halifax Infirmary Palliative Care, surrounded by his friends Miranda Pierro and Elder Debbie Eisan.
Born on October 3, 1964 , Sydney Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Henry and Mary Jane (Paul) Isaac. He is survived by his sister Mary Ann of Waycobah, and predeceased by his brothers Christopher and Gerrard.
Willie was much loved and considered a fixture at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre. His tenacity for life and survival was witnessed in the manner in which he lived his life, and you never knew when he was going to stop by for a visit, a coffee and a cigarette. All those who knew him, knew that Willie loved his culture and he loved to speak Mi’kmaw. Whenever you visited him, either at his home or in the hospital he could be found engulfed by his sleeping buddy “Willie Bear”. He loved that big old stuffed bear and will be very happy to know that Willie Bear, has found a new home at the Friendship Centre.
Willies’ desire was to be buried with his dad in Potlotek. Due to Covid restrictions, no visitation or funeral will take place at this time. When Covid restrictions are lifted, a “Celebration of Life” for “Our Willie”, will take place at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, and details will be posted to the website and Facebook page.
We would like to thank the Welcome Housing Staff, Willie’s palliative care nurses at the QE11, and the many Doctor’s, nurses and VON staff that took care of Willie during his illness. Special thank you to “Brittany” for being there for Willie. He called Brittany his “little angel”.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Cruickshanks Funeral home, Halifax.
