Edith Marie Cole, age 94 of Hamilton, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Golden Years Nursing Care. She was born in Laurel County, Kentucky on May 1, 1929, the 7th of eight children born to the late John and Maggie (Jones) Moore. Theirs was a tight-knit family, with each member committed to their farm, their faith, and Kentucky Wildcats basketball. A spirited athlete herself, Edie played basketball and volleyball throughout her childhood. In 1946 she married David H. Cole, and the couple had four children together. The family moved to Hamilton, Ohio in 1952 when Dave was offered a job with General Motors. Edie planted deep roots in her new home, attending Zion United Baptist Church and rooting for the Cincinnati Reds. She worked in the dietary department at Fort Hamilton Hughes Hospital until fully retiring at the age of 80, and she delighted in visiting the patients and staff of the hospital during her shifts. She was a talented cook, known for her down-home favorites like shuck beans and fried corn, and her chicken and dumplings were legendary. Preparing a meal for the holidays was a week-long affair, and she often prepared more desserts than there were people attending the meal. Edie also loved Country Music, even traveling with her coworkers to see their favorite artists. She continued to play volleyball at family reunions in Kentucky with her siblings, nieces, and nephews, and to hear Edie tell it, she never lost a game. More than anything, Edie deeply loved her family, and took great joy in doting on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Sondra Ledford; grandchildren, Susan (Rodney) Maggard, Zachary (Savannah) Cole, Cody Cole, Kelly Avery, Lockie Cole, Jessica Herzner, and LaNel Cole; numerous great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews and friends. Edie was also preceded in death by her two sons, Gregory David Cole and Colin Franklin Cole; her daughter Judith Ann Cole in infancy; and seven siblings; Delia, Frank, Mary Rotha, Sarah, Gladys, Beulah, and Wanda.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 11am-12pm at the Webb Noonan Kidd Funeral Home. Funeral ceremony will follow at 12pm with Pastor Mark Hampton officiating. Interment will be held at Millville Cemetery. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be left for the family at www.Webb-Noonan.com.
