He was born in Columbus, Ohio September 20, 1928 to Vera D. (Huston) and Carl L. Finkes. He was preceded in death by his parents; cherished wife, Evelyn Mae Finkes; son, Barry Chatman and brothers, David and Carl.
Growing up, Jerry loved fishing and was the State discus champion in 1946. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1950.
He was a beloved and well-respected Industrial Arts Education teacher, Drivers Education instructor and coached a variety of sports at St.Bernard/Elmwood Place Schools for a total of 43 years. Numerous former students of Jerry have shared their admiration and love for him in many ways, and are very grateful to have had the opportunity to know “Mr. Finkes.”
He served his local church in a myriad of ways over many decades—including pastoring Port Union Bible Chapel. At the time of his illness, he was an active member of Faith Bible Church. He also was a very active member of The Gideons, holding multiple state and local offices for 54 years.
Jerry was a great man of faith, fully trusting Christ as his Savior. The impact of his faith was felt by countless, through his consistent prayer life, mentoring, encouraging and just loving each one individually.
It’s challenging to capture in words all the things that describe him. For those who knew Jerry, he was undoubtedly a man of unmatched wisdom and knowledge, common sense, humor, compassion and generosity – all in countless ways. He never lacked for interests and projects, from building and fixing things to fishing, cooking and even beekeeping.
Jerry is the treasured Dad of his surviving children - Robert Chatman (June), Beverly Whiteman (Steve), Milton Finkes (Faith), Barbara Smith (Bill), Amber Duecker (David), Paul Finkes (Vickie); and 25 grandchildren; 57 great-granchildren. He was deeply loved by a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 4:00pm until 6:00 pm and on Saturday, December 10, 2022 from 10:00am until Services at 10:30 am at the Faith Bible Church, 8130 East Kemper Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45249. Pastor Kevin Landis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Jerry (and Evelyn) would be so blessed and honored to have memorials made to The Gideons International.
