Doting husband, exceptional father/grandfather, trusted friend, superb lawyer, and wonderful man has been returned to God’s care. As a longtime trial lawyer known for his sharp intellect, quick wit, dedicated work ethic, folksy charm and plain common sense, Jim had a successful law practice in the community for over four decades. Known to many as “Schep,” Jim had a profound positive impact on many lives, but none more so than his immediate family and grandchildren, through whom his legacy will live on. He was known as a source of love, humor, energy and inspiration. Jim passed peacefully on August 27, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Liberty Township. Jim was born in Cincinnati on March 7, 1942, the son of the late William and Laura (Egbert) Scheper. Jim married Joyce A. Bouck on May 22, 1965, and they remained happily married for over 46 years, raising three children and being blessed with five grandchildren. Jim graduated St. Xavier High School and Xavier University before completing his law degree at Chase College of Law while working full-time at Armco Steel as a tax accountant. He then began his distinguished and accomplished career as a trial lawyer—notably with Baden Jones Scheper & Crehan, Scheper & McGowan, and Shea & Associates—and later as a mediator. Jim was admitted to practice in Ohio and California and in the United States Supreme Court and received prominent recognition for his excellence, including being inducted as a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, perennially identified among Ohio Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America and highest AV peer-reviewed rated with Martindale-Hubble. He was a frequent lecturer and presenter in legal education seminars; co-authored Medical Malpractice Risk Management and served numerous community organizations. Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce Scheper; son, J. Scott Scheper (and wife Susan) of San Diego, CA; daughter, Lynn Brading (and husband Todd) of Liberty Township; daughter, Ann Scheper Truman of Liberty Township; grandchildren, Lauren, Zachary, Bailey, J. Luke and Claire; siblings, William (Mary) Scheper of Cincinnati, John (Zeta) Scheper of Independence, KY and Janet (Bruce) Beckroege of Cincinnati. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 5720 Hamilton-Mason Road, Liberty Township on Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:30am. Interment will follow at St. Stephen’s Cemetery. Family and friends will be received at Webb Noonan Kidd Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at South “D” Street, Hamilton on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 5-8pm. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Prostate Cancer Foundation at www.pcf.org.
