April 24, 1941 – July 25, 2020
With great sadness and longing, the family of Basmatti Randhani, known affectionately by many, simply as Ma, announces her passing on July 25, 2020 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada at the age of 79yrs. Ma was the matriarch of a large, diverse and dynamic family, and will be greatly missed and mourned by many.
Ma came into this world on April 24th, 1941 in La Bonne Intention, near Mon Repos Guyana, Daughter of Raj and Ramgobin Ramdhani and lived her formidable years in both Guyana and Suriname. She moved to Canada in 1996, where she resided till her passing just days ago, by the writing of this passage. Ma is pre-deceased by brothers and sisters Dasi, Seeram, Ramdai, Lela, Shela and will be mourned by Beco and Rena.
Basmatti has survived being widowed twice. Pre-deceased by Sasnarine Jodan of heart attack and Jerry Pesaud Ragnauth on April 28th, 1980 of acute appendicitis. Tragically, just four days after Ma’s 39th birthday.
Living a long and full life, Ma sadly outlived daughters Sunita, Data and Dolly (Balram) and son Deno, and will be mourned by surviving children Haro (Indera), Ramesh (Paula), Deo (Evette), Bobby, Davie (Pravish), Seema (Garfield) and Shabana (Vaughan). Living up to her affectionate name of Ma, Basmatti was also Step Mother to Buddie, Manoj, SeetaGeeta, Jaikumar and Sattie. And Aunti Basso was embraced as a second mother by nephew Sherman and many others as well over her long life.
As the matriarch of such a large family, Ma will be remembered by many grandchildren Run, Karen, Samantha, Andy, Subrina, Anil, Sunil, Mikey, Vanessa, Meliss, Maxieme, Lisa, Kevin, Alena, Marisa, Alesa, Sunil, Avinash, Mark, Shakiem, Jerry, Ryan, Daniel, Rogan, Jasmine, Trista and Ariana and great-grandchildren Chris, Christiana, Anna, Julie, Renata, Gearian, Aryan, Aaron and Dav.
Basmatti was a joyous, loving and giving sole, spending much of her life as a seamstress, creating beautiful clothing free style and teaching the next generation the skills and knowledge she had acquired. Ma also had a passion for planting, gardening and working the soil, which occupied her and gave her joy and sustenance throughout her life. She was always willing to teach these skills, gained over her lifetime, to anyone who asked; giving freely of her knowledge, experience and hard learned wisdom.
Ma will be sadly missed by many. A long and hard life, well lived with a chuckle and a smile, baring many fruits with embracing hugs, for every last one. The echoes of eternity will not forget Basmatti soon. The lessons she taught, the experience she gave, the love she emulated will walk with us all for generations to come.
Sleep well Ma, we’ll be ok, you did good.
