Connie was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario. Her early years were influenced by the Depression and WWII, hence her resilience and ‘make do’ attitude. In the spring of 1944 she supported the war effort as a Farmerette growing and harvesting food in St. Catharines. Her early passion for nursing culminated in graduation from Hamilton General School of Nursing where she went on to work as a registered nurse at Hamilton General, Toronto’s Sunnybrook Military Hospital and Hamilton Steel Company. During a nursing stint in Vancouver her honey Norm enticed her back to Ontario with beautiful love letters. They married 16 June 1951 and bought a house in Hamilton.
Connie and Norm loved to travel, with favourite trips to Scotland, Switzerland and visits west to see children and grandchildren. They enjoyed many curling bonspiels and medical conventions. She loved to learn and took many courses, including, sewing, furniture refinishing and even convinced Norm to take conversational french. Out of the blue she would recite poetry or sing songs and cut out interesting articles to send to her family. She kept tabs on current events and believed strongly in the protection of our planet and equality for its inhabitants. She cherished her 72 year involvement with the sorority ladies of Beta Sigma Phi and actively contributed to Olivet United Church through the UCW. Most recently she joined Barton Stone Mount Hope United Church.
Mom was calmness in the whirlwind of life at ‘110’ West 2nd and was often called on to nurse one of her children. She was graceful, wise, generous and, above all, kind and loving. We miss her deeply. Mom’s love for the well being of her family was paramount. She wished for us to be happy and healthy, to love one another, stay connected and remember our blessings. In memory of Connie please share random acts of kindness. Donate to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Barton Stone Mount Hope United Church spring/summer 2025.
