Known as Betty to everyone. Betty passed away at the age of 81 at the Juravinski Hospital on August 4th, 2023, after a short illness. Betty is an amazing woman who never strayed from her integrity, intelligence, independence, will to fight, humour, joyousness and kindness to others, human or animal. Betty is immensely loved by her only child, Elizabeth Catherine Snow (Cathy to her Mom), who was by her Mom’s side as she passed, and Betty and Cathy’s three cats: Little Toot, Baby Face and Patches.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, Susan and Reginald, and four brothers: Barry, Derek, Frank and Reginald. Betty loved her family and helped care for one of her brothers before his passing away. Betty is also predeceased by many adored pets and she can now be with them in heaven. Betty is survived by her daughter and their cats, sister Beryl, sister in law Susan, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Betty was born in England and moved to Canada in 1953 with her family. Betty was a teacher with the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board and she put herself through University to get her degree while also teaching and raising Cathy. Betty retired at age 68 and she loved to help and witness the sweetness of the children she taught.
Betty spent her retirement doing that which she loved, gardening. Betty was also a handywoman in her garden and home and Betty was so very proud and passionate about her home that she was working in her garden the week before becoming ill. Betty had many other loves as well and one of the greatest was for animals. This was so tremendous that she and Cathy were never without a pet, Betty loved seeing the birds and animals in her garden have food, water and shelter and she loved to pet any dogs that passed her way. Other things that gave Betty great joy were doing her word search books, finishing a jigsaw puzzle, going to Walmart and Home Depot, watching many T.V. shows, eating fish and chips, drinking tea, having dessert and attending garden centres, her favourite being Connon Nurseries in Waterdown, and doing all of these with Cathy.
Betty loved the holidays and enjoyed making festive meals and giving out treats at Halloween; Betty so loved seeing the children in their costumes. Christmas was a particular favourite of Betty’s as she loved to decorate her home, attend craft shows with Cathy, pick out Christmas cards and donate to those in need.
A big part of Betty’s life in the last six years was attending the St. Joseph’s Villa Day Program in Dundas where she was surrounded by happy and loving people. Betty loved the crafts, music, exercise and games there and she showed her gratitude through get well cards for the staff and attendees and bringing in treats for everyone. Cathy wants to say a special thank you to all the staff and attendees at The Villa for helping to make Betty’s last six years ones in which she could thrive.
Another important part of Betty’s life was through Cathy being part of the Golden Horseshoe Bowling League in Hamilton. Cathy wants to thank the League because they always welcomed Betty at their functions and Cathy was very touched when League members recently said of Betty that she was a wonderful, lovely, sweet and happy woman who will be missed. Betty loved the happiness and kindness of the League and showed her love by knitting some prizes for the League’s yearly tournament. From the bottom of Cathy’s heart, thank you GHBL. The accompanying picture of Betty is from one GHBL function and it is one of Cathy’s favourite pictures.
A very special thank you is for Jonalyn Arcojada who has been in Betty and Cathy’s life since 2017. Jonalyn is truly one of a kind and her caregiving presence contributed to Betty being able to do as much as she could these last six years. Jonalyn went above and beyond for Betty and Cathy, became a friend to both and helping more than can ever be expressed.
Some very important thank you’s go to Jonalyn, Susan and Stacey Anderson (a friend and teammate of Cathy), all of whom spent time with Betty in the hospital. Cathy is also grateful for the care to Betty from the B3 CCU team at the Juravinski Hospital and for Cathy’s work team members, friends and the GHBL for being so incredibly supportive. My Mom’s passing has been very difficult and Cresmount funeral home, especially D’André Leslie, has been wonderful; thank you. Betty’s love for her daughter and her pets was never ending and not a day went by that Betty and Cathy did not tell each other I love you.
Mom, you are in heaven now and I promise these days will never end. I know you love me and I love you so incredibly much.
If you would like to make any donations, please consider the St. Joseph’s Villa Day Program in Dundas, Ontario or any charity that benefits the lives of animals. Thank you.
