It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ellen Tychowsky in her 91st year. She is reunited with her loving husband Wasyl and daughter Alexandra. Cherished mother of Victor (Iva) and Emily (Roman). Adored Baba of Stephen and Matthew Chupil, Alyssa Dixon, Zachary Kuszczak, Jessica and Joshua Johnstone.
Ellen was born in Ukraine’s Cossak land and was the youngest of three children in the family of Ivan and Paraska Onushko. The family was displaced as the result of the Second World War and lived in a displaced persons camp in Germany. In 1949, the family immigrated to Canada. After completing a two year contract in Alberta, the family moved to Hamilton, Ontario and established permanent residence. In 1953, Lena was married to Wasyl Tychowsky and then the young family established their home in the fruit growing peninsula of Stoney Creek where she farmed for over 60 years. She took active interest in the Ukrainian community in Hamilton by teaching Ukrainian language at the Ukrainian National Federation, St. Vladimir’s Cathedral and CYM. She was a contributor to the Ukrainian press and notably published seven literary works dedicated to her Cossak’s land and the people that fought for everlasting freedom.
