As a result of a short illness at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Friday, February 11, 2011 in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Janina Lekusz (nee Chomik). Predeceased by his parents and his sister in Poland. Dear loving father of George (RoseAnn), Christine (Mark Johnston). Loving grandfather of James and Thomas. Will be sadly missed by his brother-in-law Richard Chomik, nieces, cousins, close friends and colleagues. Henryk Lekusz was born in Warsaw, Poland on May 30 1926. In 1932, he moved to Gdynia, where his father was a navy officer. When the Second World War erupted in September, 1939, he and his family were evacuated to Warsaw, in the middle of Poland. When he finished high school in 1943, he joined the country army (AK). He was captured and taken to the Soist Camp in Germany, a small town close to the Holland border. He was there until the end of the war. In 1945, he joined the Swietokrzyski Brigades in Furth, Germany, close to Nuremburg. In 1947, he was with the 4142 Company with the US army in Frankfurt, as a Platoon officer. In 1948, he immigrated to Hamilton, Canada where he worked in industry; he spent the final 20 years of his career in the engineering department at the McMaster Medical Centre. In 1950, he married his wife Janina. In 1958, he joined the Polish Combatants Association and worked in various positions such as secretary, editor, business advisor, etc. In 1986, he became the president of the Polski Sad Kolezenski (SPK) 23 in Hamilton. In 1995, he became curator of the SPK Foundation. In 1991, he became president of the Polish Combatants. In 2007, he adopted the main KPK, representing Polish combatants in Canada. In 2006, he joined the Polish veterans Organization. Henry has also been a strong influence at his home church. He has organized many pilgrimages to the Niagara region, as well as the United States of America. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree. In 1986, he was awarded the Golden Cross Medallion of Matka Boska Czestochowska, by the President of Poland; in 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Krzyzem Kawalerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski along with many other prestigious medals throughout his career. Visitation at TRUSCOTT, BROWN & DWYER FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1309 King Street East (across from Gage Park at the delta) on Monday, February 14th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Polish Church on Tuesday, February 15th at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
