She was predeceased in 2012 by her husband Albert (Jerry) Dawson after 64 years of marriage.
Born in London, England, Penny lived through the bombings of World War II before making the journey to Canada in the early 1950s. She and Jerry settled first in Toronto, then married and built a home in Hamilton in the mid-1950s, where Penny would remain for the next 70 years. She worked for many years at Eaton’s downtown Hamilton flagship store and other local retailers, becoming a familiar face to countless customers.
Sharp-witted and fiercely independent, Penny lived life on her own terms. She was an avid reader who made weekly pilgrimages to the Terryberry and Turner Park library branches, favouring biographies and books with humour. Music was a companion she relied on, with cherished memories of concerts at Royal Albert Hall, her love of classical music, and the smooth sounds of Tony Bennett playing throughout her life. She liked to indulge in the simplicity of milk chocolate and she had a soft spot for dogs.
Penny is survived by friends in Canada and family in England. Her final years were spent at Meadowlands Retirement Community, where the staff became her extended family. Heartfelt thanks go out to her caregivers at Meadowlands and Juravinski for their compassionate care.
At Penny’s request, there will be no service. Cremation has already taken place. Those wishing to honour her memory may consider a donation to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
We cherish every moment spent with you, Penny, and are grateful for all the laughter and happiness you brought to our lives. Your kindness and gentle heart will never be forgotten.
