It is with deep love and profound sadness, his family announces that John passed away peacefully in his 82nd year, after a brief illness, with family by his side, on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Beloved husband of Roberta (nee Patterson) (Woods) for 31 years. Loving father of Dennis (Yvonne), Laura (Renato) Pullio, Patricia (John) Kroeze, stepfather of Nancy Middleton, Douglas (Glenda) Woods, Michael (Cindy) Woods, proud grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 5. He also leaves his brother David (Nancy) and their family, along with other extended family and friends.
John was predeceased by his parents Walter and Viola (nee Pelot) Purcell and brother Dennis.
Born in Ottawa, November 23, 1943, the family moved to Windsor during his elementary school where he later attended University of Windsor, majoring in English and History. His love of history has been constant ever since. His career started with the Royal Bank in Windsor and led to increased challenges into retail with The T. Eaton Company in Toronto. When personal computers came on the scene, he took off with it. This later led to joining Sheridan College where he found great joy in sharing his business and technical experience while teaching computer technology and business management.
John loved the outdoors, and camping became a passion from tenting in the bush to travelling across North America in a travel trailer. He loved telling stories to his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to always expand their minds.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are invited to his Memorial Service at the Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue East, Hamilton, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 1 pm.
Should you wish as an expression of sympathy, donations to the Hamilton SPCA https://www.hbspca.com/ or the Juravinski Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family https://www.hamiltonhealthsciences.ca/about-us/our-organization/our-locations/juravinski-cancer-centre/.
Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
