In his 90th year, Joe passed peacefully in his sleep at Billings Court in Burlington with family by his side. Beloved husband of Anne, for 63 years, loving father of JoAnne (David) St. John, Cathie (Brian) Kelemen, Lori (Frank) Ciccolini and Amy (Doug Blades). Lovingly remembered by grandchildren Stephanie, Katy, Laura, Michael and Natalie. Fondly remembered by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kay and John Spehar of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Predeceased by brothers Frank and John and sister Anne. Uncle Joe to numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Michael and Martha Loncarich for their love and support. Born in Croatia, his family moved to Canada in 1928. Joe lived a full and long life. A dedicated employee of STELCO, Joe retired after 34 years of service. He was a long time member and actively participated and supported the Croatian Fraternal Union. Joe was an avid Bridge player and prolific gardener. It was music that was truly his passion. Gifted with musical talent, Joe learned to play the tamburitza as a young boy. As a member of the Becar Tamburitzans he entertained audiences with his vocal talents and expertise on the brac. He taught young and old how to play the tamburitza. Most notably at the Croatian National Home in Hamilton, for more than sixty years. He inspired others to preserve their heritage through music and left an unmatched and far reaching legacy to the Croatian community in Hamilton, Southern Ontario, Canada and beyond its’ borders. Special thanks to the staff of Billings Court for the excellent care Joe received. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 11th from 2 -4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton, ON L8K 1V9. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 12th at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Church, 1883 King Street East, Hamilton, Ontario L8K 1V9.
