Darling son to Klaus and Susan Grotke, cherished brother to Raymond Grotke (Krista) and Melanie Grotke (Jesse). Devoted uncle to Chelsea and Connor Grotke. Deeply loved by his uncles and aunts, Gerd Grotke (deceased), Carol Golden (Bill), Quentin Harvey (Eleanor), Lorna Lamparski (John), and Matt Harvey (Sarah). Beloved cousin to Devon Leslie (Lisa), Brynna Leslie (Nick), Tim Harvey (Jennifer), Tami Pederson (Kurt), Lisa Guimond (Dan), Alexandra Cunningham (Shane), Jake Lamparski (Liah), and Bronwynne Thompson (Dylan). Treasured by his second cousins and dear friends, many of whom were like close family to Karl.
Karl was an esteemed high school teacher with HWDSB for 20 years, and a valued and active member of the OSSTF community. He walked the halls of the schools, always with a beaming smile. His colleagues remember him as a well-respected and devoted teacher, who was held in the highest regard by teachers and students for his positivity, compassion and dedication; it is clear he made a significant impact on the lives of the students and staff that surrounded him.
Karl—you were a source of laughter, kindness and comfort to many people. It seems you touched the lives of so many individuals—your friendships were strong and vast, reaching across oceans. If you had the pleasure of getting to know Karl, you knew that he genuinely cared for you, and showed this sentiment by listening intently, asking questions about your life and making you feel important in every interaction.
Quality time with family and friends was the most important aspect of Karl’s life. He was there to pick you up from the airport, to wave goodbye from the edge of the driveway, and for the cherished memories he made a point to create in between. He made time to be at every gathering, whether with friends and family at Summerhouse Park, cheering on the Tiger-Cats or traveling to the UK and Germany. He traveled far to be with the people he loved and often initiated family and friends’ reunions, making a point to get everyone together as often as possible.
Karl, you will be remembered for the positive energy you spread to all places and people you encountered. You are truly an irreplaceable being, and your family and friends miss you dearly—always close to our hearts.
