Mary Ellen was born in Vancouver in 1927. During the war, she worked as a telegraph clerk for the CPR. While travelling with her parents on a train, she met the love of her life, Capt. Donald Smith, who was returning from service in Europe. They would marry in 1947. They moved to Winnipeg, where they welcomed their son David in 1953. They later moved to Toronto where they welcomed their daughter Debbie in 1957. In addition to supporting Donald’s career as a painter, she was herself a gifted weaver and quilter. They later moved to the Hockley Valley where they enjoyed many happy years with family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
