My Friend Mike

Fortunately for me, I have had the pleasure of knowing Michael for about 17 years (give or take). Even though I moved away from Hamilton almost six years ago, he has always been one of my favourite individuals.

I am extremely thankful that I am able to call him an old and dear friend who had one of the best laughs ever.

I have numerous fond memories of Mike and I was fortunate to have a camera for this one. I took this picture about twelve years ago. Mike had lost a bet.

While a bet at the bar was normally settled by a shot and a beer, occasionally it was enhanced by other requirements. I had seen losers have to wear opposing teams jerseys on many occasions, but this event was obviously special.

I affectionately titled the photo "Pantyhead Glover".

He said he had a rash for days...…

Thank you Mike for being such a dependable, unique, charming, stoic, proud, funny, smart, respectful, unpredictable, understanding, tolerant, generous, and kind friend.

I am truly grateful to have had you in my life and will always cherish the memories.

P.S. To Austin and Spencer - I wish that I could be there with you. Next time I am in Hamilton I hope we can get together and have a drink in honour of your Dad. I cannot recall a father who had as much pride and adoration for his sons as your Dad had for you both.

To my cousins, great-nephews and families. Nothing said nor done fills the gap now felt so strongly. I become 61 in a few short days, but the marking of passing time fails to really describe who we are to to each other. We met one and all and celebrated life, music, good food and drink in Hamilton and on Montreal's south shore brought together on birthday reunions, performing on stage for each other...

As we grieve it seems like a million years away...

But I learned years ago a simple yet profound truth. The darker days of Autumn reminds us of passing seasons. We know of them yet despite being well informed, we feel the cold no less. I did not know of Michael's illness so for me, the news arriving days later shook me and I had to catch-up to everyone else. For his sons, less of a surprise possibly but how much more painful. That fact alone tells us that in our grief, pain measures the love and loss of a meaningful life.

We now prepare in days leading up to another kind of family gathering in memory of Michael, his chair terribly empty. But consider how his essence, not destroyed simply moved on into timeless eternity? There and then, no past and no future exist as we know of them here and now. It's always simply today. That possible, what greeted him on the other side? Not only our ancestors but everyone one of us and our descendants as our following Michael loops us back to his arrival into Eternal, everlasting nowness. If we sense Michale's presence among us may it reflect a wonderful mystery of sweetly echoing the connection made as he, rejoined us as we awaited with Uncle Rodger, Aunt Bea, Nanna for another, amazing and graceful Life Celebration. Let's get up on stage as people draw near with their folding chairs & cool drinks. Bert, count us down and let the music play!
