Stjepan Pokolic

Steve was born in Croatia on August 1, 1939 to parents Blaz and Franciska. Steve grew up in a small village in Croatia called Medjemorje. As a youngster, he developed a love for sports and outdoor work while helping take care of his seven siblings, as the second oldest child. At the age of twenty-four he met the only love of his life, Doroteja. They travelled to Germany in search of work. After living in Germany for four years, he and Doroteja moved to Canada where they settled and lived a wonderful, and prosperous life until his tragic passing. Stjepan was an employee of the City of Hamilton for 30+ years, until his retirement in 2000. During his retirement Stjepan enjoyed travelling to the Caribbean, tending to his enormous garden, spending time with his beloved dog Zoey, entertaining his family with beautiful lunches and dinners all the while spoiling his 4 grandchildren.

His jovial nature and calming presence will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of 61 years, Doroteja. Adored father of Steven (Lisa) and Peter (Amanda), and four grandchildren Marisa, Stephanie, Charlotte, and Luke. He is survived by his brother Vinko, and his sisters Sofia and Mara.

Visitation will be at MARKEY DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (1774 King Street E, Hamilton) on Thursday January 29 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with Rosary at 7:45pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Friday January 30th at HOLY CROSS CROATIAN CHURCH (1883 King Street E, Hamilton). All are welcome. Entombment followed by at Our Lady of the Angels. A celebration of Stjepan’s life follows at noon at The Croatian Sports and Community Centre on Green Mountain Road.
