Zoltan Gergyek

Zoltan Gergyek passed away suddenly but peacefully at the age of 86 at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton. Beloved husband of 63 years to Ana (nee Rajbar). Loving father to Mary (Scott) Chafe, Joe (Carolynn) Gergyek, and Elizabeth (Robert) Herrington. Cherished Ata (Grandpa) to Shawn (Rachel), Jeffrey (Elizabeth) and Jeremy Chafe; Matthew and Lucas Gergyek; Joshua Marratt (Erika) and Zachary Herrington; Great Grandpa to Noah, Liliana, Abigail and Christian. Born in Prekmurje, Slovenia in 1935, Zoltan emigrated to Canada in 1957, where his bride to be Ana joined soon after. They eventually settled in Hamilton. Zoltan came to Canada with next to nothing and worked extremely hard to build a comfortable life for his family. Once settled in Hamilton he worked at Dofasco for 27 years retiring in 1992 but he was always active working at something. In his “retirement” he was a Jack of all trades handy man who was always willing to help family, friends and neighbours. His very strong work ethic is instilled in his family and is evident right down to his grandsons. He stayed active until Rheumatoid Arthritis slowed him down. Equally strong was Zoltan’s love of family. He cherished family time whether at his and Ana’s home at the huge extended table for 20+ for those giant Gergyek meals, or in cottage country surrounded by family. He will be forever cherished, in our hearts and our minds.

Due to Covid-19, all visitations and funerals are restricted to a specified number of attendees. All visitors will be required to wear a face covering, as well as provide name and telephone number to funeral home staff. Visitation is at MARKEY-DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth) on Thursday October 21, 2021 from 1-5pm with prayers at 4:30pm. Funeral Service will be on Friday October 22, 2021 at 10am at St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church, 125 Centennial Parkway North in Hamilton. Interment will follow at Our Lady Of The Angels Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Arthritis Society or St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church.
