Born in Lee County hospital on September 16, 1939, the oldest son of Robert Brooks Jr, (RB) and Katherine Gunter Wicker, he and his 3 brothers were a close-knit family.
His youth was filled with cherished memories of LIFELONG childhood friendships.
At the tender age of 15, following the death of his father, Brooks took on the role of caring for his family.
As a strong and solid student athlete at Sanford Central High School, he excelled in academics and was awarded a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina. His community and church supported his college goals.
After a year at Carolina, he hitchhiked his way to The North Carolina State College of Agriculture where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He felt at home at NC State.
His strong work ethics and loyalty enabled him to have a successful career with General Electric in Wilmington, where he worked for over 25 years. Along the way he built strong relationships and was highly respected in the engineering profession.
Brooks and his wife Barbara established a beautiful life together in the Scotts Hill community where he faithfully served his church and neighbors. He and his family continued to fulfill their dreams of living on the coast at the south end of Topsail Island. Through the years they constructed their dream home and settled in Mallard Bay, where he was able to indulge in his favorite pastimes of golfing, fishing, boating, yard work, home projects, NCSU events, and above all making memories with his grandchildren.
Brooks leaves behind a legacy and love for his daughters Elizabeth Gardner (Derek), and Suzanne Wicker, along with grandsons Derek, Jr. and David Brooks. The treasured bond he shares with his brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews is everlasting.
The family is humbled and appreciative of the support and encouragement his caregivers have provided and will welcome friends and family for a drop in visitation on Friday, November 20, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 at Andrews Hampstead Chapel located on 17730 Highway 17 North, Hampstead, NC 28443.
