

Amelia Walls Midgette Bird born 10/9/28, passed away on October 30, 2025. She was born in Ninety-Six, South Carolina, and graduated from Laurens High School, Laurens, S.C in 1946. She entered the United States Cadet Nurse Corps as a 16 year old on September 11, 1945 and attended the Elizabeth Buxton School of Nursing in Hampton, VA. She graduated as a Registered Nurse on September 4, 1948. She was supposed to be commissioned in the Army, but the war ended before she was deployed. While still a student nurse, she met William V. Midgette and secretly eloped with him and was married in Pasquotank County, NC on May 22, 1948. They had a formal wedding at the home of her parents on
October 15, 1948. Upon her graduation from nursing school she did a short stint at Fort Monroe Army Hospital before being released from service. She became a nurse for Dr. D.N. Nelms in Hampton for several years before joining Langley Air Force Hospital. Mrs. Bird retired from Langley AFB Hospital after 30 years of nursing in the Labor and Delivery Ward. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Hampton, VA.
Mrs. Bird was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, William “Bill” Midgette; her parents William Anderson Walls and Margaret Towles Walls; sister Rebecca Tollison; brothers John Walls, James Walls, Malcolm Walls and William Walls. She was also preceded in death by second husband Donald Lacey Bird of Dallas, TX.
Survivors include son William Keith Midgette and wife Lori of Newport News, VA, daughter Vanessa M. Napier and husband Dennis of Chesapeake, VA, and son Mark Midgette and wife Sharon of Corolla, N.C. Grandchildren include Matthew Midgette (Hayley), Elizabeth Haemmerlein (Phil), Christopher Midgette (Crystal), David Napier, Amy Napier, Peyton Midgette and Madison Midgette. Great-grandchildren include Audrey Haemmerlein, Thomas Haemmerlein, and Hazel Midgette. Step children include Douglas Bird (Kathi), John Bird, Mary Auchterlonie (Keith) and Brian Bird (Lori).
Funeral services will be held on November 8 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Hampton, at 11:00 and will be followed by a reception.
