Born and raised in Fox Hill, she was a lifelong resident of Hampton. Ann Marie retired in 1992 from the Security Assistance Training Field Activity (SATFA) at Fort Monroe, receiving the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award after more than 33 years of service.
After retirement, Ann’s love of animals led her to volunteer for many years at Animal Aid Society’s No-Kill Dog Shelter in Hampton, where she met many new friends, and adopted several furry companions providing them a loving home.
Mom was the heart and soul of our family. She was a kind and generous spirit who gave all of herself to those who knew her, and will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.
Grandma Ann enjoyed time spent with her family, shopping on the internet, playing computer games, reading, watching all televised crime shows, and working jigsaw puzzles some of which ended up in the trashcan.
Ann Marie was preceded in death by her grandmother, Eulah H. Johnson, mother, Rachel J. Williams, and brother, Chat Jr. Williams.
Survivors include her son, David Helfrich and wife Theresa (Gloucester), daughters Melody Carden and husband Lamar (Hampton), and Teresa Spruill and husband Steve (Hampton); six grandchildren, Rachel Johnson, lsabell and Gabriel Carden, and Taffy, David and Jeremy Helfrich; and four great-grandchildren.
Mom and the family were blessed by Pat Mulligan and Joanne Garrison for the wonderful love and care they gave of themselves.
Ann Marie will be buried in Clark Cemetery in Fox Hill. At her request no graveside service will be held.
