

He attended Newport News Public Schools and was a proud member of the Huntington High School class of 1960. He was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church East End.
Archie was employed with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock in 1961. After 44 years of service he retired as a Master Shipbuilder. He was also a proud member of the Retired Steelworkers of America.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents, Archie P. Bates Sr. and Cary Bates; two sisters, Addie Wilson and Loretta Purnell; and his brother, Milton Bates.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Mildred B. Bates; daughter, Valerie Martin of Hope Mills, Nc; son, Archie P. Bates III (Juley) of Manassas, Va; four grandchildren, Ariel Darden (LaSha’), Suffolk, Va, Matthew Martin (Cecilia) Lynchburg, Va, Cassandra Bates, Arlington, Va, and Andrew Bates of Manassas, Va; two great-grandchildren, Khari Darden and Maxwell Martin; sisters, Gloria Ashlock and Susie Harris; sister-in-law, Ella Bates; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Archie enjoyed numerous hobbies. He enjoyed collecting, fishing, hunting, and traveling, and also making people laugh. He was a friend to ALL, and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:00am, at Parklawn Memorial Park’s Chapel Mausoleum, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, Va 23666. The service will be officiated by Reverend Dr. Leroy Salary Jr..
