Billy Bryant McDuffie

Billy B. McDuffie, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died on December 18, 2018. Billy was born on December 8, 1929 in Samson (Geneva County), Alabama. He had been a resident of the Peninsula since 1959, except for a tour of duty in Vietnam. A retired US Air Force Senior Master Sergeant, he loved his country and was proud to serve her. He served tours of duty in North Africa in the late 1940’s, Korea 1953-1954, and Vietnam 1963 - 1964. Billy is survived by his wife, Sarah; son, Henry and his wife Faye; daughter, Helene and her husband Howard Smith; four granddaughters, Beverly (Nathan) Sharkey, Sarah (Sean) Lally, Janie (Kenny) Weeks, and Heather (Marlon) Pendergraft; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan and Shelby Powell, Marlon Jr. and Hayden Pendergraft, Sean Lally, Henry Sharkey, and Oliver Weeks. He worked briefly for two companies following his retirement from the Air Force in 1970 before settling down with Virginia Power (now Dominion Power) at Surry Nuclear Power Station. He retired from the Power Company as Station Supervisor of Industrial Safety, Loss Prevention, and the Medical Department in September 1992. He will be missed by all who knew him. Billy was an active member of the Northside Christian Church, serving two terms as Deacon, substituted as Sunday School Teacher and administered the Visitation Ministry for shut-in/homebound Church members until he felt that his age and the health of his wife necessitated his stepping down. At the family’s request a private service will be conducted by Mr. Larry Jones, Senior Minister at Northside Christian Church.
