Obituary of Carole LaDawn Knopp
Carole LaDawn Knopp, 58, of Newport News, VA passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in her home. Carole was born to Betty Louise Gretten and David Peter Gretten on September 9, 1965 in Hampton, VA. Carole grew up in Hampton, settled in Salem, VA, where she lived for several years before deciding as a single parent, to relocate herself and her three sons to Hampton Roads. Carole was strong and courageous in moving and was determined to do her best to provide for her boys, which she did, and did well. Carole was then reunited with David Knopp. She and David were sweethearts as young adults and had gone their separate ways. Anyone that knows David and Carole, know they were made for each other. Soon after reuniting, they were married and it was as if no time had been lost. They made a life together that was loving, safe, and comfortable; they took great care of each other. David took on the role together with Carole, to parent, love, and care for the boys. Then came their granddaughter, Myah! Myah made Carole a Gammie. Gammie cherished every minute she spent with Myah. They played together, laughed together, had sleep-overs. As far as Gammie was concerned, nothing was too good or too much for Myah – just ask Amazon. Gammie loved Myah with an endless love. Gammie will always be watching over her Myah. Carole worked at Ferguson Enterprises before she came to HII-Newport News Shipbuilding where she found her O19 family. She settled in quickly and became a valued member of the team. Carole loved sharing one-liners and putting smiles on peoples’ faces. She had a sweet spirit and a lot of energy. She loved to help in any way she could. She was incredibly generous in so many ways. Carole was incredibly proud of her boys and the young men they have become. She delighted in telling friends and family of their accomplishments. She was excited when at one point, all three of her boys joined her in employment at NNS. Carole was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Gretten, father, David Gretten, brother, John Gretten, nephew, Cody Winkler, and her beloved dachshund, Lucy. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, David Knopp, sons, Isaac Wheeler, Jacob Wheeler, Matthew Wheeler, bestie and granddaughter, Myah Yost, sister, Deborah (Mark) Adams, brother, David (Melissa) Gretten, sister-in-law, Renae Knopp, nephews, Joshua (Aleksandra) Winkler, Cameron Winkler, Anthony “Tony” Gretten, nieces, “Jessica” Danielle Gretten (Jacob Genovese), Amanda “Shea” (Jordan) Johnson, Grace Sandhofer-Adams (Nic DiTommaso), Madeline “Maddie” Adams, aunt, Carole Byrd Sheline, uncle, Delan “Deno” (Pam) Jones, a great host of cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces, friends, and Shipyard Family. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 11, 2024, 1:00 pm, with a service immediately following at 2:00 pm, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666.
