

Cecil Grimm “Tubby” Mauld, lifelong resident of Hampton, VA., passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the age of 91. He leaves behind to cherish his memory Patricia Meeker Mauld, his beloved wife of 60 years.
Tubby and his twin brother William "Jenks" Mauld were born in the Bridge Street home of their mother and father, Anna Pearl and Fred Cecil Mauld, in Hampton on July 28, 1919. He was baptized at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Hampton, on April 11, 1925.
On May 18, 1942 Tubby entered into active service with the United States Army and served in WWII as a Tank Commander assigned to the First Army, 7TH Corps, 9TH Infantry Division, Company “B” 746TH Tank Battalion. Tubby and the 746TH were part of the invading force at Utah Beach in Normandy, France on “D-Day”. From “D-Day” until the end of the war Tubby saw action in France, Belgium and Germany. He was a highly decorated soldier. He received 4 purple hearts, and survived having his tank shot out from under him 8 different times.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army in May 1945, and until his retirement a few years ago, Tubby was a well respected men’s clothier, best known for the many years he “dressed” the many doctors, lawyers, judges, and business executives who regularly shopped Benton Knight , Ltd. and the Varsity Shop in downtown Hampton.
Tubby was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, and his grandson Adam Linhart.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 3 daughters, Pam Strahorn-Roe and Paul, Cindy Linhart and Delmas, Lisa Mauld and David Farmer; his son, Patrick Mauld and Cindy; his 5 grandchildren, Julie Reed, Bryce Strahorn, Travis Strahorn, Jordan Mauld, and Jake Mauld; his great-grandson, Tyler Linhart-Reed; and special caregiver Brenda Jones.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 29 from 6 to 7:30 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Daily Press Holiday Fund-PCFVA, 11742 Jefferson Ave., Suite 350, Newport News, VA 23606 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in memory of Tubby Mauld.
