Born on October 22, 1930 to Sadie and Fred Nelson on a farm in Tennessee, he was the youngest of nine children. Papa decided at age 21 that it was time to leave the homestead and joined the Air Force, where he spent the next 28 years traveling the globe to Alaska, China, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Guam, Hawaii, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, Portugal Thailand, Vietnam and ultimately ended up retiring as a Sr. Master Sergeant in Hampton, VA. During that time, he married Joyce Coleman (deceased) and had two children: Bill (deceased) and Diane.
Chuck worked hard, played hard and loved to tell jokes. There are many who loved him and will mourn him, especially his immediate family; daughter Diane Reed, husband Andy and their daughters, Kaitlyn, Madison, Austin and Lisa, his extended family; Ingrid Picha and her children Dean Picha and Joanne Gardner, son-in-law Todd and grandson Christian, his nieces, friends, and neighbors.
In his later years Papa was blessed to have wonderful caregivers that allowed him to stay in his home and enjoy his life; Dee Dee, Sharmanek, Linda, Janice, Kirby, Ciara, Jennifer, Tondra and Jimmy. May the love of Christ keep him and hold him forever!
A Celebration of Life for Chuck will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
