

Cheryl Rae Baker, affectionately known in her community as the "M&M Lady" or by her CB radio handle "Lady Shortstop," passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026. A lifelong resident of Newport News, Virginia, Cheryl brought unique warmth, energy, and joy to everyone who knew her.
Cheryl’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a lifelong, dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church, where she poured her heart into guiding the next generation, spending many years teaching Awana and various Sunday School classes. She had a deep passion for sports and was always happiest cheering from the sidelines, especially when watching her sons play.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald R. Baker, Sr.; her parents, Raymond M. Nelson, Sr. and Mae M. Nelson; and her sisters, Lynda K. Via and Donna N. Wagner.
Cheryl is survived by her brother, Raymond M. Nelson, Jr. (Cathie); her two sons, Ralph H. Saunders, Jr. (Elizabeth "Betsy") and Samuel M. Saunders (Shelly); and her grandchildren, Brooke, Bryce, Roseanna and Noah Saunders.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Grace Baptist Church, located at 1423 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA 23666. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 10:00 AM.
Following the church service, burial services will take place at 11:00 AM at Parklawn Memorial Park, located at 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666. Family and friends are then warmly invited to return to Grace Baptist Church at 12:00 PM for a reception and time of fellowship.
