Clare Margaret Stevens, loving and beloved wife and mother, died on July 13, 2026 from respiratory failure and a heroic eight-year battle against ovarian cancer. She was 77 years old. Clare was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the oldest daughter of Roy and Katherine (nee Kenney) Liebert. She graduated from Mercy High School in Milwaukee and then attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, graduating with honors and a degree in Chemistry. While at Bradley, she met her future husband, Michael Stevens. They married in December 1970, and both were a little surprised when his four-year ROTC commitment morphed into a thirty-year Air Force career – unexpected, but a genuine adventure.
Clare was always an avid reader. She also loved movies, crafts of all kinds, Christmas cookies, the Washington Nationals, and the Green Bay Packers. She enjoyed singing and was particularly proud of her nineteen-year stint as an Alto 2 (altos rule!) with the Virginia Choral Society.
Clare was preceded in death by their son, James. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Michael Stevens (Col, USAF, ret), as well as her sisters, Kathy Andrzejewski (Michael) of Franklin, Wisconsin, and Monica Liebert (Hallie Kintner) of Mount Vernon, Washington; her brother, James Liebert of Seattle, Washington; her sister-in-law Jean Stevens (Jeff Bernstein) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; nephews, a niece, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 from 3:00pm-6:00pm, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life is planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Choral Society (www.vachoralsociety.org), the Peninsula Foodbank (hrfoodbank.org), the James M. Stevens Memorial Scholarship Fund (www.pcfvirginia.org) or a charity of your choice.
