David Allen James, Sr., age 63, of Suffolk, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus, on April 21, 2026, after a battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His humor, charm, and unforgettable storytelling left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was known for making people laugh until their cheeks hurt. He had a way of bringing joy to every room and making even ordinary moments feel special. A gifted salesman and natural leader, David was highly respected in his career and built lifelong friendships along the way.
In his younger years, he enjoyed surfing, karate, and kickboxing. He also coached little league and played softball. He loved spending time on the golf course and took pride in keeping the best-looking yard in the neighborhood. But his favorite way to spend time was bass fishing. He enjoyed the peace of being on the lake, and the thrill and excitement of reeling in his next catch.
Above all, David loved his family deeply and was happiest spending time with those he loved. He enjoyed meeting them for dinners, having cookouts, and gathering for holidays. When he got promoted to the role of “Grandpa David,” he cherished every moment with his grandchildren - teaching them to fish, cheering them on from the sidelines, and creating memories they will hold forever.
David was preceded in death by his father, Howard Allen James, Jr., and mother, Donna Lee Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Anita; his children, David and Matt; his stepchildren, Greg (Taylor), Derek (Brooke), and Britni (Phil); his grandsons: Harrison and Mason, his granddaughters: Makayla, Blake, Kendall and Camryn; and his siblings, Eddie (Audrey) and Nancy (Mike); and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
David’s family will hold a celebration of life on April 30, 2026, at 6pm at Southside Baptist Church, 917 Carolina Road, Suffolk, VA 23434. The graveside service will be held on May 1, 2026, at 11am at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23666. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Southside Baptist Church’s, “Southside Mission”. Please include “on behalf of David James” in the memo.
