Doris Arlene Monroe

She was born on June 5, 1936 to Rita Estelle Harris and Sidney Thomas Ellis. She was a student at Warwick High School, Newport News VA, before walking the stage and eventually the aisle with her beloved partner for life, Lloyd Monroe, on October 7, 1956. Doris held a fruitful career as an Avon Representative, and she was an active member of the Fox Hill Road Baptist Church, enjoying fellowship and community at their church activities. Doris participated in the Woman’s Missionary Union, took care of children at Vacation Bible School, and acted as a spiritual teacher and leader for the 4-5 year old children at Sunday School. Outside of work and church, Doris was an avid reader who loved to shop.

Doris’s greatest achievement was the family she and Lloyd built. Doris and Lloyd spent 70 wonderful years together, and she raised 2 beautiful children, relishing in her role as mother, grandmother, and even great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all of her friends and family.

Doris is survived by her husband, Lloyd Monroe, and her two children, Vicki Monroe Raines (Carl) of Bowie, Texas and David Michael Monroe of Hampton, Virginia. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Eric Daniel Raines (Alana) of Lewisville, Texas, Nathan Alan Thomas Raines (Tasha) of McKinney, Texas, and Leah Michelle Wagner (Mikel) of Crowley, Texas, and her great grandchildren: Jakob Phillip Shoen, Katharine Marie Shoen, Aiden Joseph Raines, Benjamin Wyatt Raines, and Warren Thomas Wagner. Doris is also survived by her sister, Sharon Mileski of Springfield, Missouri, and her sister-in-law, Freida Ellis, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, Rita and Sidney, and her brother, George Ellis.

The family will receive friends for a visitation that will be held at Fox Hill Road Baptist Church, 335 Fox Hill Rd, Hampton, VA 23669, on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 9:00 am to 9:30 am. A Celebration of Life will be held for Doris at 9:30 am, following the visitation at Fox Hill Road Baptist Church, 335 Fox Hill Rd, Hampton, VA 23669. An interment to follow the services at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606.
