I am a childhood friend of Melvin's and shared many experiences with him as we grew up in Copeland Park. Unfortunately, as often happens, our paths went separate ways after graduating from high school. I went on to an engineering career and Melvin followed his path in the shipyard. Over the past several years I tried to track him down but was not successful to my regret. I have an old photograph of Melvin and me, arms on each others shoulder, each of us smiling and wearing a brand new sports coat on Easter morining. I think we were maybe 12 yrs old. Back then it was the custom, at least with our parents, to buy us new outfits every Easter. We competed for grades in school and I held my own but I could never compete athletically with him. He was a great baseball and basketball player. I remember that we built and installed a basketball goal outside his apartment in Copeland Park and I spent many hours there trying to hone my basketball skills to match his. I never succeeded. Another memory I have is that it was customary at that time to trade comic books with others in the neighorhood. We did this about once a week. He was a shrewd trader and I never got the best of the deal. All of these, and many more, are great memories. I truly regret that we never crossed paths again in life but I do know that we will meet again but not in this world.

Will always remember the fun we had when Melvin was at the Apprentice School and I was dating Mopey Ferree and my best friend was dating Freddie Wright. There are lots of good memories in my mind that Melvin shared in. Sounds like he had a good life and for that I'm happy. My thoughts and prayers go out to Melvin's family and close friends. He will be remembered fondly.
