Edker “Dick” L. Saunders, 80, was called home to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his home surrounded by family members. He was a native of Newport News and a resident of Hampton for most of his life.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Hampton. His career with the Newport News Shipyard spanned 37 years and he retired in 1989 as a Pipefitter Foreman in the X42 Department. As an avid reader, he concentrated on Biblical studies and enjoyed gospel music.
Surviving members of his family include his wife of 39 years, Ruth J. Saunders; sons, Edker L. Saunders, Jr., Timothy Saunders, Richard Saunders, and Bryan K. James; daughters, Bonnie Saunders Breedlove, Kathleen Leggett, Vivian Mancini, and Patricia Hoggard; 58 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and brother, Herbert Eugene Saunders.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to noon, Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Bethel Baptist Church of Hampton. Following the visitation, a service celebrating Dick’s life will be held at noon, Tuesday, at the Church. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
