In Loving Memory of Esther Yvonne Newman, lovingly known as Yvonne, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026 at the age of 73. Yvonne was born to Carolyn Yvonne Williams (later Pope) and James “Curley” Hilton, who preceded her in death.
Yvonne was the oldest of her mother's children, with Deborah Dowdy following shortly thereafter. Their mother later remarried Carroll E. Pope, who brought six children of his own, Joan Gentry, Jonas Pope III, Frieda Barner, Juanita Isaac, Carroll Pope , and Kay Kindle into the family. Together, her mother and stepfather welcomed four more children, Michael Pope, Paul Pope, David Pope, and “her little sissy” Carole Pope, known to all as Yoyo, surrounding Yvonne with a large and boisterous family who enjoyed good times and good food.
Yvonne grew up in Richmond, Virginia, before moving to Newport News, Virginia, then Rich Square, North Carolina, and finally settling in Hampton, Virginia, where she built her life. In Hampton, she cultivated a family of her own choosing, one made up of cherished friends, neighbors, and coworkers who became as close to her as blood relatives. While working for Harrison and Lear, she met two young ladies, and their families who would forever change her life, her beloved goddaughters, Erica Bell and Tometrica Devereaux, whom she loved deeply.
Yvonne was a giver through and through. She always had a delicious cheesecake ready to share with the people she loved and good advice ready for anyone who needed it. She found joy in her plants and flowers, in laughter, and most of all in her precious grandbabies, who held a special place in her heart.
She was sentimental and cherished every gift given to her by loved ones, proudly displaying them throughout her home. She was stylish, neat, and beautiful, and her sharp mind meant she always seemed to know a little bit about everything. Yvonne worked hard her whole life and lived it on her own terms.
She leaves behind her beloved son, Tyraine O. Newman , and two precious grandchildren, Mackenzie and Tristan, along with siblings, her goddaughters, extended family, and a wide circle of friends who loved her dearly.
She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family will receive friends for a Visitation that will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23666, on October 23, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Committal Service will take place at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Rd., Hampton, VA 23666, following the Chapel Service.
