Garland "Scott" Smith

September 29, 1966January 10, 2020

Garland “Scott” Smith, 53, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 after a two year courageous battle with cancer.  He was born In Newport News, VA on September 29, 1966.  He attended Warwick High School.

Scott loved music, playing his guitar, singing, sports (especially the Dallas Cowboys), fishing, and had a heart for all God’s animals.  He loved the outdoors, sitting on his front porch in his oversized rocking chair talking with everyone and anyone who passed by, as he had many friends and acquaintances in his neighborhood.  He was known by some as “Smiley” because you were always greeted with a smile and a kind word. He loved his childhood friends and maintained constant contact with them his entire adult life. He fed the birds and squirrels and had a great love for his last two dogs Tarzan and Taz.  He was a man content with the life that God provided, not needing worldly possessions.  His only needs were met through his personal relationships with his large family and multitude of friends.

He was preceded in rest by his step father, Donald V. Greathouse; his grandparents, Thomas E. & Vera Morris and Eunice Womack; his great grandparents, Clarence & Ella Morris and Charles & Edna Clark; and his nieces, Jennifer & Jessica Smith.  He is survived by his Mother, Clara M. Greathouse; his brothers, Douglas W. Smith Jr. (Michele), Donald C. Greathouse (Jane); his sisters, Denise Whitt (Larry), and Tammy Jefferson (Clyde). He is also survived by two great aunts, Dorothy Griffin and Dot Griffin; aunts Barbara Morris and Brenda Strong (Danny); uncles Thomas Morris (Johnna), Charles Greathouse (Margarete), Harold Snyder (Doris), Jack Greathouse (Laurie), and Roy Greathouse.  He is also survived by 4 nephews, 1 great nephew, 3 great nieces, numerous cousins, and an abundance of friends.

A memorial service will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Thursday January 16, 2020 at 1:00pm with a visitation to be held one hour prior.

I did not know Scott very well however, the times I did meet him you could tell he was a kind soul. God bless your family during this hard time.😥

The earliest memory i have of my brother is when we very young, Scott was once again hospitalized. My eldest brother Doug & I were brought to the hospital by our aunts Brenda & Barbara. We weren't allowed to go in, in those days kids couldn't visit. So we looked up the building and waved to him from outside, I never knew if he was there, but our aunts said my Mom was holding him. Now its that day again, but when I look up now, although I can't see him, I know he is looking down on me. Scott may have been born with so many complications, but he never wanted you to feel troubled by it, he just wanted you accept him the way God made him. Be at peace Brother, I love you and you will be thought of often. Sis.
