Obituary of Georgia Morris Hunter
On January 12, 2019 Georgia M. Hunter, a resident of Hampton, went home to be with her Savior. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, H. Robert Hunter; her two daughters, Marsha Hunter Gray and Susan Hunter Engler; son-in-law, Jeffrey Gray; and grandson, John R. Engler, all of Hampton, Virginia. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie Brown (Charles) of Poquoson, Virginia; her brother, James Morris (Addis) of Hampton, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews and their children. Georgia was devoted to Christ, her family, her church, and the education of others. She earned a Masters of Arts Degree from East Carolina University and a Masters of Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While teaching at Chowan College in North Carolina, she met and married “Bobby”, the love of her life, and they established their home in Hampton, Virginia. While still a newlywed, she was hired as the first female professor employed by Christopher Newport College in 1961. She understood the importance of opportunity and quality education for all. In 1968 she took the opportunity to join the founding staff of the first fully integrated high school to open in Hampton, Bethel High School. She would remain on staff until her retirement in 1994. Having taught from the 60’s through the 90’s, she often joked that she’d “seen it all”; but that no matter the generation, all students had the need for tough love, compassion, and a praying teacher in common. After retirement, she continued to educate by teaching Bible study classes and volunteering her time to Kraft and General Stanford Elementary Schools. As her health declined, she continued to teach by demonstrating her strength and faith. She adapted to her circumstances with dignity and grace, and touched the lives of those who cared for her. Her family wishes to thank all those that assisted with her care, and to the friends and family that visited with her. Funeral arrangements are through Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home located at 2551 N. Armistead Avenue in Hampton. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. A funeral service will be held at Northampton Presbyterian Church located at 1217 Todds Lane in Hampton on Thursday, January 17, at 11:00 am. The burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton, Virginia.
