

He spent most of his early life as a resident of Compton, California and graduated from Compton High School. He enlisted in the USAF in 1952, after graduating from Aviation Cadets in 1955. He reported to the 84th Bomb Squadron as a navigator/bombardier on B-45s.
He entered pilot training in 1958 and was subsequently assigned to the 9th Tactical Fighter in Germany as F-100 pilot. He returned to the U.S. in 1964 as an F-105 pilot stationed at McConnell AFB, Kansas. Col. Lewis flew two combat tours as an F-105 pilot: one with the 469th Squadron in 1966 and the other with the 44th Squadron in 1969. He flew a total of 300 combat missions with 100 over North Vietnam. Between tours he was Stationed at Nellis AFB, Nevada as an F-105 Weapons School Instructor, and a Wild Weasel Instructor. Subsequent assignments included an F-105 pilot on the Tactical Air Command Staff at Langley AFB, VA, Commander of the 448th Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, and Test Director of the F-16 Multinational Operational Test and Evaluation Team. During his career he flew the T-33, T38, F-100, F-105, A-10, and F-16. He retired from the USAF in 1984 following an assignment to the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is survived by his wife, Rose; four children, Robyn, Renee, Todd, and Greg; and granddaughter, Jamie.
The family will receive friends for a Visitation and Gathering that will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on May 14, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by the Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 12:00 pm.
Final Committal with Full Military Honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, 1 Memorial Ave, Fort Myer, Virginia 22211, US, at a later date.
