Ida was born on September 26, 1928 and was the wife of James A. Jenkins, who preceded her in death on May 25, 1988. Aside from the fifteen years when she travelled the world as an Air Force officer’s wife, she lived on the Peninsula her entire life. She lived in the Woodmere section of Newport News since 1964.
In her youth she worked at First National Bank, Noland Company, in the civil service at Fort Monroe, and North American Aviation. In 1963, she became a licensed cosmetologist. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, she was active in a number of local clubs and organizations, including the local gardening club. She enjoyed crafts and sewing.
She was the mother to two sons, Will A. Jenkins (deceased) and David H. Jenkins, who is currently on the Newport News City Council. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Trina Jenkins of Appalachia, Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Linda Jenkins of Newport News, Virginia; granddaughter, Wendi Wampler of Appalachia, Virginia; her great-granddaughter, Kailey Wampler of Appalachia, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews throughout the country.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions and health considerations, the family does not plan to hold a public service.
She will be reunited in interment with her husband of thirty-nine years in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Peninsula SPCA in memory of Ida and her beloved golden retriever, Stubby.
Arrangements will be made by the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home.
