James Michael Phillips

James Michael Phillips, 73, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 18, 2026 in Dayton, Ohio, where he lived for over 30 years. Mike, as he was known, was born to the late James W. and Kathleen L. Phillips of Poquoson, Va., where he grew up and graduated high school. At Poquoson High he was a member of the science club; which carried over in his career as Director of Environmental Health in Dayton, Ohio; member of the math club, he enjoyed a dollar sign; the debate team, which goes without saying; played in the PHS marching band, and was voted Best Dressed in his senior year, also carrying over throughout his adult life. He further graduated from James Madison University and received his Master’s degree from Tennessee State University.

Mike was active in the 4-H club in Poquoson as a child, loved the outdoors and adventures such as boating and fishing, skiing, camping, music and concerts. He was generous towards his family and others and will be remembered as enjoying life, always full of surprises, and always loved, never forgotten.

Mike is survived by his sister, Nancy and her partner David, several cousins, and Mike’s longtime partner, Paulette. My heartfelt gratitude to her for her tireless dedication, support and help to my brother over the years. You will forever hold a place in my heart and his.
