Jeff was born on November 27, 1956, and lived a life marked by a unique spirit that those who knew him will never forget. He faced life’s challenges in his own way and lived his life to the fullest. He loved his family, friends, and all of God's creation. He was almost always happy, and lived one day at a time. He was a warm, loving and colorful person.
Jeff was a son, brother, uncle and friend. He shared a special bond with his family, and despite life’s ups and downs, those connections remained important to him. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his stories, his determination, and the moments of laughter and conversation that he shared with those closest to him.
Jeff was a carpenter by trade, and had the reputation of being one of the most talented and detail-oriented trim carpenters on the peninsula. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, surfing and all sports. He was particularly fond of the Washington Commanders football team, though he would only call them by their original name.
During his illness, Jeff spent time reflecting on matters of faith and eternity. In his final days, through conversations, prayers, and loving support, he found comfort in accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior, and his growing relationship with Him. His family takes peace in knowing that he embraced that faith and faced his final journey with hope and courage.
Jeff expressed his faith in Christ in ways that brought reassurance to those who witnessed it. His family finds comfort in the same promise Jesus gave to the repentant thief on the cross: “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). Like the thief on the cross who turned to Jesus in his final hours, Jeff found grace, forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. He was surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends, whose presence brought him comfort and peace, as he completed his earthly journey.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, James W. Rumley. He is survived by his mother, Lois R. Peterson of Williamsburg, his sister, Lisa Sawin (John) of Williamsburg, his brother, John Rumley (Theresa) of Hampton, two nieces, one nephew, two grandnieces and four grandnephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the hospital staff and the hospice staff who provided care and compassion during Jeff’s illness.
Though he is no longer with us in body, Jeff’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Private family service will be held to celebrate Jeff’s life.
“For by grace, you have been saved through faith”. Ephesians 2:8
