On March 10, 2022, 8 days shy of her 101st birthday, Jessie Almeida Belor, passed peacefully in her sleep from this world to be reunited with her husband, of 81 years, Lt.Col. Vernon Belor. The Colonel passed earlier this year at 103. As it was on earth, let it be in heaven, for their union was surely one made in heaven. On days when Jessie was especially missing the Colonel, she would listen to a certain song and say, “When I get to heaven, Daddy’s gonna grab me and kiss me and say, “Well, Honey, what took you so long?” They are now, hand in hand, “Stolling Over Heaven”, forever and a day.
Jessie was born in Monroe, Louisiana and grew up in Wood River, Illinois. She was proud to have been childhood friends with well known movie star, Clint Walker, “who starred as Cheyenne Bodie, in the 1950’s TV series, ‘Cheyenne’.” Jessie had a lot of fun with that and enjoyed telling some very intriquing stories from her childhood.
She left home at 17 to go to Glendale, California and became a baby nurse. As God would have it, there she met her future husband and they would come to live out their lives together for the next 81 years. Jessie toured the world with her husband during WW2, because back then, “that’s what you did”. In between raising 3 sons while in the military, she took up painting and turned out some pretty impressive art work, as she was compared with Bob Ross for her style. She was an above average golfer in her time, as well as an excellent bowler with an average of 200. Jessie was a wonderful cook, a great dancer and could sing quite well, as she proved when she sang her signature song, ‘One Day At A Time’. Her ‘Honey Bun Hubby’, was known to have said, “I made the living and Jessie made the living worthwhile”. Even with all that, she found time to raise 2 more children, a son and a daughter, after she and the Colonel retired from the military.
Jessie is preceded in death by her husband of 81 years and son Michael Boyd. She is survived by sons, Harry Vernon Belor of the home, Danny and Debbie Belor of Kentucky, John Michael Belor of Hampton and daughter Michelle Belor of Hampton. She held in her heart several grandchildren, Tonya Belor, Randy Belor, Daniel Belor and wife Wendy, Danielle Belor and Phillip Furr Jr., as well as several great grandchildren. Rest in peace Jessie, sweet, beautiful lady. You will be missed.
Jessie requested to have no viewing for her and in keeping with her wishes, only a funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 13, at 10:00 AM at Parklawn Funeral Home, 2551 N Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666. It will be officiated by Pastor Lance Bacon, of Greater Discipleship Center with burial to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Jessie asked that donations be made to The Greater Discipleship Center, 1307 LaSalle Ave, Hampton, VA. 23669.
