

Jimmie was born on April 6, 1941 in Fort Payne, Alabama. She graduated from Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing in 1962 before starting her career as a registered nurse. During this time, she met and married her husband of 59 years, Richard Earl Cassat. They had two daughters: Angela Cassat of Saluda, VA and Cindy Cassat Wakefield (Jamie) of Chesapeake, VA.
A staunch patriot, Jimmie was a retired lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force Reserves, and she served during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After retiring from the Air Force Reserves, she served in the civil service at Langley Air Force Base hospital, and also at Sentara Hospital.
Jimmie was a long-time member of Community Presbyterian Church in Hampton, VA. She was also an active and cherished volunteer for S.C.A.T. (Sharon’s Critter Action Team), and she loved sewing, gardening, bird watching and reading. Jimmie was a kidney transplant recipient, and she remained passionate about serving others her entire life.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Thomas and Cora McBrayer; her brother, Joseph McBrayer; and her sister, Linda Tettleton.
She is survived by her husband; her daughters; sister, Freda Lucy; brother, Hoyt McBrayer; grandchildren: Colby Corbett and Hope Wakefield; godchildren: Joseph Carr and Katie Carr, M.D.; and a host of loving friends and former coworkers.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Community Presbyterian Church: 400 Fox Hill Road, Hampton, VA 23669, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
