

Directly following graduation from Kecoughtan High School in 1977, he was drafted by the Montreal Expos baseball farm team. After injury ended his career, he returned to the Peninsula. After several temporary jobs, he spent 15 years at Newport News Shipyard. Following time at the Newport News Shipyard he spent a short career as a meat cutter before retiring on disability.
Preceding him in rest are his parents, Sewell and Daisy Willis; and brother-in-law, Charlie Houdashell. Surviving members of his family include his children, John W. Willis, Jr. and wife Anja, and Jamie M. Willis and significant other Russell Smith; grandchildren, Maggy, Sadira, Solina, Zoe, John, Logan, and Landon; brother, Larry Willis; sisters, Nancy Massie and husband Charlie, Gail Storms and husband Joe, Sandy Briggs and husband Ron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held at a later date to share memories and stories, and celebrate John's life.
His children wish to express their appreciation for all the heart felt condolences and remembrances shared by friends during this very difficult time.
